In view of advancing climate change, the concept of resilience is increasingly important for the forest and wood industry. However, what exactly is resilience? And more specifically, what is required to create resilient systems? This article introduces contributions to this special issue, which emerged from the 19th Seminar in Forest Economics. It presents the three fundamental types of resilience that have emerged in the literature. Further terms are defined in a tabular overview. The most important elements of a concept for measuring resilience are presented. Finally, we derive various conditions from the literature that constitute a resilient system. Due to a lack of empirical studies, it is not possible to say whether the forest and wood industry in Switzerland meets these conditions.
